Law School

Last Saturday were the October LSATS. Unfortunately, I didn't take them. I probably should have but I was too "busy" (see "Scrantastic" in the right hand column) this Summer to get my shit together and study for them. Both my roommate Nick "Nasty" Marsh and my brosef Rich did take them however, and apparently it wasn't as bad as many of the practice tests they both had taken.

This week I have been paging through a book I found in Nasty's room, US News and World Report's "Ultimate Guide to Law Schools." It's terrifying. The middle 50% range of Harvard Law admitees is 169-174. The same state at Dickinson, Penn State's law school is 152-157. The median starting salary for Harvard Law grads is $125,000 a year. For Dickson grads its exactly half that $62,500 a year.

Not that money is the only thing that matters to - although 125 k a year would sweet - but what's really scary is that just over ten points on this test could conceivably result in someone (me) missing out on over $300,000 over the first five years of employment after law school (a $62,500 difference over five years: $312,500).

Obviously this is far from a scientific analysis, but its still pretty staggering to think of the LSAT that way. I am registering to take the test December first. I am planning on locking myself in my room with all Nasty's LSAT books till then.
